Why Switch To More Natural Options?

All of the products we use in our everyday lives can have a negative effect on our health and wellness. Switching to more non-toxic products can be a healthier choice. This All Natural Laundry Guide will provide you with tips to get you started. But why should you care?

After learning about all of the synthetic ingredients and chemicals in most conventional laundry soaps and dryer sheets, I figured it was best to find a better solution. So I did some research.

I joined Young Living over a year ago in hopes to start my journey with essential oils. What I didn’t realize was how much more I was getting. They also have a full line of natural, plant-based products. From cleaning and self care products to supplements, makeup, and options for your kids and pets. It was the best decision!

When I purchased a Premium Starter Kit (with 12 everyday oils, a FREE diffuser and other products) I also joined Essential Rewards. This is essentially their monthly wellness box. You get to choose what items come to your door every month and it’s the best way to try new oils and natural products. It made it so much easier to ditch and switch our products.

So, I made the decision to start there. Within the first few months we ordered the Thieves laundry soap. After that, we began ditching and switching our hand soap, dish soap and other home cleaning products to more natural, organic, plant-based options.

I have sensitive skin and after just a few months using the super-concentrated laundry soap I was already feeling a difference. It’s so nice to know that there are quality natural options out there. And this was the most cost effective way to do it.

Stretch Your Dollar

That being said, I have also learned how to stretch my money even further. We buy one 32 fl. oz. bottle of Thieves laundry soap and split it into two large Mason jars. We purchased these from Hobby Lobby but you can also find some great options on Amazon. I’ve listed a few on my FAVORITES page HERE.

I really like the Mason Jar containers because they have the measurements on the side. This makes for a good guide as you divide your laundry soap recipe. The jars should be able to fit 8 cups of liquid to be on the safe side so I purchased the 64oz size. The recipe below lasts us about 6 months with a regular amount of laundry loads.

Plant-based Laundry Soap Recipe:

2 Large 64oz Glass Containers with lids (hold about 8 cups liquid)

1 32oz bottle Thieves Laundry Soap (Young Living)

6 capfuls Thieves All-Purpose Cleaner (Young Living)

40 drops Young Living Citrus Fresh Essential Oil Blend

Step 1:

Divide your Thieves Laundry Soap evenly into your large glass containers. Should be about 2 cups per jar. Just set them side by side and pour the soap in until they have the same amount.

Step 2:

Add 3 capfuls of Thieves All-Purpose Cleaner to each jar.

Step 3:

Add 20 drops of Citrus Fresh Essential Oil Blend into each container.

Step 4:

Top each jar with 4 cups warm filtered water. If you are using the Mason Jars you should now be at 6 cups of liquid each.

Step 5:

Secure lid and slowly swirl jars around to combine the laundry soap. Don’t shake! This will cause too many bubbles. The warm water helps it all to combine easily.

Step 6:

Pour Laundry Soap into a slightly smaller jar fixed (32oz) with a pump lid. I also use a Mason Jar for this. Depending on the size of your pump you’ll need different amounts per load of laundry. With the slightly smaller Mason Jar we use about 50 pumps per load

NOTE: Our pump is smaller so you have to use a little more. If you had a longer pump I would try half that amount (maybe 25 pumps)

It may sound like more work than to just fill a small cup and throw it in but the extra 30 seconds it takes to pump your laundry soap in your load is worth it! Especially when you are now using a more natural, plant based laundry soap that is not only healthier for your family but also cleans just as well if not better than the popular brands.

Wool Dryer Balls

Now that we’ve cleaned the laundry, let’s talk about the best way to dry it. The majority of us have probably used dryer sheets. What you may not know (I sure didn’t) is that conventional dryer sheets are loaded with synthetic scents and chemicals. These chemicals can have a negative effect on your body’s hormones, immune system etc.

Don’t just take my word for it. Do your research. There is a great article with some more information HERE. You can also download the “Think Dirty” App and scan products in your home. This will give you a breakdown of all the possible harmful ingredients in your everyday products.

Luckily there is a better way! We got rid of our dryer sheets and now use wool dryer balls and essential oils to freshen our laundry. Some of you may already know about these but they are a great option. You can purchase white ones for your white loads and dark gray or black ones for your darker laundry. Honestly, either one works fine.

We bought one pack of 6 wool dryer balls in dark gray and use them for all our laundry. They help to fluff the laundry and they don’t shed. My favorite wool dryer balls can be found HERE or just check out the Essential Oils section of my Favorites Page.

Natural Replacement for Dryer Sheets: (per load)

3 Organic Wool Dryer Balls

3-5 drops Essential Oils per ball

You can choose whatever scent you like. I recommend using Lavender (for sheets), Citrus Fresh (for most laundry) or Purification (stinky items). I only use Young Living Essential Oils because of their SEED to SEAL promise (HERE) and the fact that their oils are beyond the standard for what the FDA considers Organic. After a lot of research, this is the only brand I stand by. For more information check out my post about Essential Oils and Wellness HERE.

TIPS:

*Add more drops of oils when they begin to lose their scent. I recommend every 5-7 loads or so.

*Add one or two large safety pins to each dryer ball to help naturally combat static.

*Add dryer balls the last 15 minutes of your dry cycle to get the most benefits from them while also making them last longer.
