The perfect sweet treat

Nothing says Valentine’s Day more than CHOCOLATE! It’s always the perfect pairing to flowers and a delicious meal for two. These Double Chocolate Cookies with Sea Salt will satisfy any sweet tooth.

Chocolate is always a great choice when it comes to dessert, and cookies are always a favorite. I created this recipe with these thoughts in mind. A chewy chocolate cookie with white chocolate chips and sea salt. Such a fun combination!

Gift of love

These cookies can be packaged up easily and enjoyed for days. They also pair well with coffee or wine…making them the perfect choice any time of day. If gifting these for Valentine’s Day you can buy some clear cellophane bags to store your cookies in and tie a pretty ribbon around the top.

A simple white takeout box can also help wrap these cookies up nicely. All can be found at the dollar store or any craft store so you aren’t spending a lot of extra money. It’s the thought that counts the most. Just a little extra effort can go a long way.

I think it’s fun to make something special for your partner for Valentine’s Day. It shows you took the time to create something with love that they would enjoy. Making cookies is one delicious idea outside of the normal chocolate candy.

Mix it up

The pairing of dark and white chocolate is always a nice balance. With the addition of sea salt the flavors are over-the-top delicious! That’s what makes these Double Chocolate Cookies with Sea Salt so special. Sweet and salty! Yum!

I love that this cookie recipe is so versatile. Just like any good chocolate chip cookie recipe, the ingredients can be switched up. You can add regular chocolate chips, peanut butter chips, butterscotch chips etc. Get creative and mix up any flavors you like. You can check out my Classic Chocolate Chip Cookie Recipe HERE.

I always use a combination of regular granulated sugar and brown sugar in my cookies. This ensures a crispy outside and a chewy center. In my opinion, the qualities of a perfect cookie. If I want an indulgent dessert I won’t skimp on delicious ingredients. After all dessert is to be enjoyed…..in moderation of course.

Recipe tips:

-To ensure you have the correct amount of flour, always measure your flour by spooning it into a measuring cup instead of packing it. You want that loose spooned flour full to the top and then using the flat side of a butter knife, smooth off the excess.

-Make sure butter is softened to room temperature. Microwaving the butter will make your cookies too flat. I find I get the best texture when I leave the butter sticks out on the counter until they are softened.

-Baking sheet vs pizza stone? I find that baking cookies on baking sheets cooks them too fast on the bottom and aren’t great for even cooking. It is most likely just my oven, but I have always loved baking on a pizza stone better. Everything I bake on it always comes out amazing!

-Make sure to line your baking sheet or pizza stone with parchment paper for easy cleanup.

-Chill your cookie dough at least 30 minutes to an hour before baking. My best tip is to scoop them first and then chill them. That way you can take them immediately from fridge to oven. This ensure your cookies won’t be too flat. They will bake up thick and perfect. If you wait to scoop after chilling, the dough will begin to warm up again.

Ingredients

  • 1 1/4 Cups All Purpose Flour
  • 1 Cup Whole Wheat Flour
  • 3/4 Cup Cocoa Poweder (I use Hershey’s)
  • 1 tsp Baking Soda
  • 1 tsp Kosher Salt
  • 1 Cup Unsalted Butter (2 sticks), softened
  • 3/4 Cup Brown Sugar
  • 3/4 Cup Granulated Sugar
  • 2 Large Organic Eggs
  • 1 tsp Vanilla Extract
  • 1-1 1/2 Cups White Chocolate Chips (depending on how much you want)

Instructions

  1. In a medium mixing bowl, combine all-purpose flour, wheat flour, cocoa, baking soda, and kosher salt using a whisk. Set aside.

  2. With a stand mixer, beat softened butter with both sugars until creamy. Add vanilla. Next, add one egg at a time and mix until combined.

  3. Using your stand mixer, slowly add flour mixture into butter mixture and mix until combined. You can also do this part by hand if needed.

  4. Once combined, add white chocolate chips or whatever flavor chips you like. Mix on low until just combined. If not using a stand mixer, you can just stir chocolate chips in with a large, sturdy mixing spoon.

  5. Scoop cookie dough into 1 1/2 inch spoonfuls and place on a parchment lined baking sheet or pizza stone. You can make them smaller (about 3/4-1 inch) if you want more cookies. Be sure to leave a few inches in between the cookies so they have room to expand while baking.

  6. Bake at 375 degrees for 9-11 minutes for bigger cookies (1 1/2 inch balls) or 7-9 minutes for smaller cookies (3/4-1 inch balls). See Recipe Notes below.

  7. Cookies can be stored at room temperature in an airtight container or bag for up to a week for freshness. You can also freeze them in freezer bags to enjoy later.

Recipe Notes

NOTE:

-Every oven is different so it's best to start with the least amount of time and check them. You can always add time but you can’t go back once they’re too dark.

-If you want a soft, chewy cookie take them out when they are lightly brown and almost look a tiny bit undercooked. Let them cool down for a few minutes on baking sheet to finish cooking and then you can move them to a cooling rack or plate.

-For a crunchier cookie, you want to pull them out when they look completely cooked and a little darker. Usually the longer baking time.
